DP calls upon government to scrap taxes on security cameras

MUHAMAD MATOVU

The Democratic Party president general Norbert Mao has called upon government to scrap taxes on security cameras such that they can become affordable to many people.

Mao’s comments came shortly after a recent murder in Mengo where a private security camera captured two men attacking and strangling a bodaboda cyclist to death.

While addressing journalists at the party headquarters in Kampala, Mao stated that there is an increase in murder cases in different parts of the country and some of the criminals are being exposed by security cameras.

“People were killed in Masaka area, you heard of this killing in Mengo, and there have been so many killings in different parts of the country, “he said.

Mao noted that Ugandans need to challenge the government to ensure that they live in a secure and safe environment.

“In one case in Mengo, it is the private camera of a nursery school which captured the images of the killers. President Museveni's cameras cost billions but this one does not cost much but it was able to capture these killers in Mengo,” he said.

He asked the government to abolish taxes on security cameras so that more private people can afford and install cameras in their homes.

"We want these cameras to be affordable. I am told that there are even cameras that can be installed in cars so that whatever what’s happening around your car is recorded through your mobile phone and goes into cloud," he said.

Mao noted that technologies can help in curbing crimes therefore security is too important to be left to police only.

In the other news, Mao said the party will soon officially unveil popular musician Joseph Mayanja aka Jose Chameleone as a DP member.
