Activists accuse ministry officials of conflict of interest in awarding licenses to labor exporting firms

The Uganda Poor Youth Movement ( UPYM), an organisation that advocates for youth employment, on Wednesday lashed at some officials in the Ministry of Gender, Labour and Social Development, for persistently showing conflict of interest in the award of licenses to labour exporting companies.

In a press conference held at Makerere University Guest House, the youth movement representatives, said if the current situation of discriminating labour firms continues they will not hesitate to name and shame the said public officers embroiled in this corrupt tendency.

The youth said one of the commissioners at the Labour Ministry, runs a labour exporting company, concealed in the names of other individuals. They said the said officer’s company has been fleecing salaries of the youth working abroad with impunity.

“The worst encounter at the Ministry of Labour is that in 2014, one of the senior officials had a company which withdrew money for all guards in Iraq and it closed down and re- opened in another name...," said Zahid Sempala, the Uganda Poor Youth Movement Spokesman.

He called on the Permanent Secretary in the ministry, Pius Bigirimana, to streamline his ministry before it faces what he termed as: “Being eaten to the stem”.
