VIDEO: Besigye on Heroes day celebrations: Why award Ugandans for killing fellow Ugandans?

Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) party strongman, Dr Kizza Besigye has said that Heroes day celebrations and awarding medals to supposed heroes is a good gesture but the concept is not.

According to Besigye, the awarding of medals and recognising selfless efforts of Ugandans was conceived to recognise those who made exceptional achievements during the 1981 and 86 wars.

However, there are very few wars where we are fighting foreigners, with most of them being between Ugandans over political differences and ideologies.

“We are killing our brothers and sisters for whatever political differences they are. I have serious difficulty in using a disastrous situation of brother killing brother to recognise those who excelled in killing others, those who achieved highly in killing brothers and sisters.”

The honouring should not be a subjective process, or political. It should be a process that is entirely merit driven.
