Mischievous guests steal Swedish, Norwegian, and Uganda flags from Swedish embassy in Kampala

Featured

Unknown thuggish guests last week used the opportunity of Nordic National Day celebrations hosted by the Swedish Embassy in Kampala to make off with official flags for Uganda, Norway and Sweden, that were in possession of the embassy.

The celebrations that took place at Sheraton Kampala Hotel on May 30, attracted over 700 guests with Ugandan and Nordic citizens, the Diplomatic Corps and representatives from the government of Uganda, the Private Sector and Civil Society Organizations as well. The theme of the day was "Universally addressing climate change for a sustainable future’.

Following the event, guests were treated to a cocktail, cake cutting, dinner and a live band performance. It is during the circumstances that the flags were un-hanged from their respective positions by yet to be identified people.

According to information from the embassy, the Swedish flag was later traced to a partying mzungu (white person) at Big Mikes bar along Acacia Avenue, who was seen unwinding in the wee hours of the next day, with the flag wound around his head.

“It is about 150cm tall and,110 cm wide. You recognise it by its blue and yellow colors. It was last seen in the early morning hours at Big Mike's, around the neck of a partying muzungu (possibly a proud Swede), worn as a cape,” the embassy reports.

“It is thought to be in the company of its Norwegian and Ugandan counterparts who, just like our flag, are missed. As much as we understand and appreciate the pride and cool in wearing our flag, we do miss it and need it back.’

Meanwhile, during the event, Swedish Ambassador to Uganda HE Per Lindgärde delivered a speech on behalf of the Nordic Ambassadors in which he focused on the importance of collective action to successfully reduce emissions and improve our environment.

"Climate change is one of the greatest threats to global security. The Nordic countries will continue to work on the peace and security aspects of climate change. In this spirit, we invite each and every person to join hands in the fight against climate change. Everything that we do, every choice that we make, we can make a positive difference for our environment. I challenge you all, to take up an action to improve the world we live in, and to ensure that we leave behind a planet that is better for our children,’ he said.

WE LOST OUR FLAG

Since last week's Nordic National Day celebrations, the embassy has not been quite the same - We are still missing a dear member of our family who has been missing since the night of the event. Please help us find our flag!

It is about 150cm tall and,110 cm wide. You recognise it by its blue and yellow colors. It was last seen in the early morning hours at Big Mike's, around the neck of a partying muzungo (possibly a proud Swede), worn as a cape.

It is thought to be in the company of its Norwegian and Ugandan counterparts who, just like our flag, are missed. As much as we understand and appriciate the pride and cool in wearing our flag, we do miss it and need it back!

If you have any information, or possibly even the flag itself, please let us know below (or, more favourably, return it to the embassy!).
