Lira mayor, town clerk granted bail

The Lira Mayor Mike Ogwang and deputy town clerk Patrick Ogweng have today been granted a

shs.3 million cash bail by Chief Magistrate of Anti-Corruption court Pamela Lamunu.

The officials are accused of abuse of office. It is alleged that in December 2018, the Mayor irregularly awarded a contract worth Shs.25 million to Saving Grace Nursery and Primary School to manage Coronation Park, while the town clerk participated in the same.

It is also alleged that the officials provided a false statement of account on the same contract that was allegedly illegally awarded.

The storming of the Lira administrative units by the State House Anti-graft Unit followed numerous complaints by whistleblowers, who called Nakalema’s office through the official toll free lines that were provided to the public.
