District authorities in Mbale have proposed the scrapping of a certificate of registration scrapped from the job requirements of a district engineers.
The authorities comprising district service commissioners and CAOs told the Appointments Committee of Parliament sitting at Mbale district council chambers that the requirement has made it difficult for the district to attract registered engineers who prefer to work in the private sector due to low pay at the districts.
The officials also attributed the problem to scarcity of registered engineers due to stringent requirements.
They appealed to the MPs to advocate for the review of the job specifications to scrap the engineers registration from the qualifications for the position of district engineer, adding that non registered engineers are capable of meeting the job specifications since they are the ones doing the work in the absence of registered engineers.
Most of the districts in the region have acting engineers who are not registered by the engineers BOD.
The MPs said they would engage the Engineers Registration Board to see how the matter can be handled.
