Kyetume beat Plascon to earn maiden Uganda Premier League show

Mukono based Kyetume Football Club on Saturday broke the jinx to qualify for their maiden Uganda Premier League appearance.

Kyetume had to waiter a little longer before joining the top flight league after losing out to moneybags Wakiso Giants who topped Elgon group to grab a direct promotion slot.

KCCA FC and Uganda Cranes former midfielder Jackson Mayanja’s side however sealed their maiden promotion for top flight football when they beat painter makers, Kansai Plascon FC 4-1.

A hat trick from veteran striker Robert Ssentongo and another goal from Benon Tahomera, were enough to see them secure victory at the StarTimes Stadium, Lugogo on a bright Saturday afternoon.

Speaking shortly after the game, Kyetume coach Allan Kabonge, who boasts himself as Uganda’s Sir Alex Ferguson could not hide his excitement after guiding a fifth team to the Uganda Premier League.

“I must thank God who has enabled me guide a fifth team to the Uganda Premier League. It is a big achievement for me,”Kabonge told the Nile Post.

The flamboyant tactician however attributed part of the team’s success to a number of veteran players at the Mukono based club.

“When I came into the team, I realized they could help us. I made sure they get playing time and this has paid off,” the tactician said.

Kyetume has Robert Ssentongo, Vincent Kayizzi, Owen Kasule and Patrick Ochan as some of the veteran players in their ranks.

Man of the match Robert Ssentongo said he was happy for fulfilling the promise he had made while joining Kyetume.

“I joined the team in the second round and my sole aim was ensuring Kyetume qualifies for the Uganda Premier League. Here they are. It is a job well done for me,” the former URA FC striker said.

Kyetume, also nicknamed the slaughters now join Wakiso Giants and Proline Football Club who had earlier got straight places after topping their respective FUFA Big League groups to play in next season’s StarTimes Uganda Premier League.
