KCCA FC now in league of African giants like Al Ahly - Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago

Kampala Lord Mayor, Erias Lukwago who is also the patron for KCCA FC has said the Ugandan league champions are now ripe to be equated to African giants like Al Ahly from Egypt.

Speaking at the end of the season party, Lukwago said the 13 time Ugandan champions can now comfortably be pitted with a number of giants on the continent, thanks to achievements in the past few years.

“Am not an expert in this field but in terms of ranking, we should be number one in region. We can comfortably beat Gor Mahia(Kenya), Yanga(Tanzania) and others. I don’t know any club that can beat us,”Lukwago said.

“We might be somewhere in the  cluster of Al Ahly, TP Mazembe, Mamelodi Sundowns, Kaizer Chiefs, Raja Casablanca and it is not a  mini achievement for us.”

The Kasasiro boys were in January eliminated from the Confederation Cup in the qualifier stages whereas last season, they stopped in group stages of the Caf Champions League.

The club patron said despite making a mark, KCCA FC is capable of evening lifting the continental title to match well with North African clubs that have lifted it the most.

“We need to go beyond that mark. It’s possible to bring trophy here. We have the minimum facilities to help us register those achievements. Never say never. It’s my dream and I want to see it before I exit city hall.”

The acting KCCA Executive Director, Eng. Andrew Kitaka said the authority will continue funding the activities of the team by increasing the budget.

“We are making plans to see how we can progressively expand the stadium and also provide lighting so we can have games and training sessions at night,”Kitaka said.

“Your only job is working hard on the pitch and being disciplined .We shall continue looking for funds to inject into the team,”Kitaka said.

While KCCA FC  admirers will point to the 16 titles that record league champions SC Villa have, the Kasasiro boys  are in the league of their own having won the league five times in the last seven years since 2013.

The Lugogo side is only three titles shy of struggling SC Villa whereas this is Mike Mutebi’s third league title at KCCA FC having joined them at the start of the 2015/16 season.

KCCA FC has previously won the league in 1976, 1977, 1981, 1983, 1985, 1991, 1997, 2008, 2013, 2014, 2016 and 2017.
