ICT minister flags off 10 MUK students to China

Uganda’s ICT and National Guidance minister, Honorable Frank Tumwebaze says the country has embraced the technological advancement extended by Huawei, a leading global Information Communications Provider.

Frank Tumwebaze applauded Huawei for its consistency in skilling and nurturing ICT talent. He made the remarks during the commissioning of Huawei’s ICT Academy at Makerere University.

The same ceremony saw 10 Seeds for the Future fellows flagged off for a two-week intense technological training opportunity from various Chinese universities.

Seeds for the Future is a Huawei Corporate Social Responsibility program that seeks to establish collaboration with local governments, higher education institutes and other organizations to select top university students and young government officials to study and gain work experience at Huawei’s headquarters in China.

The ICT Minister immediately tweeted ‘pleased to launch and flag off this morning Makerere university students that have selected to go to china for mentorship under #Huaweiseeds4Future program. Let’s continue skilling young talents to innovate. Reads part of his tweet.

Makerere university also tweeted “another big days here as we launch @Huawei’ ICT Academy in Uganda. The academy is going to be hosted at Makerere University under the college of computing and information technology,” reads part of the tweet from Makerere twitter handle.

Some of the 10 university students we interacted with during the flag off of the Huawei ceremony at Makerere campus said that the two weeks training in china is a blessing to equip them in improvement of their software innovation.

Ekisa Rodney Simon, a software engineer Makerere university, said “ I have developed up an app in the bus industry to ease congestion, lining and traffic Jam in the city and am optimistic that the training will help me in manning this apple when I comeback.

In a related development, Huawei has entered an agreement with Makerere University to establish an ICT Academy in Uganda. The academy will offer free certification to students with the aim to improve and cultivate ICT talent, bridge the gap between universities and the corporate world by offering hands-on training, promote ICT industry technology certification, develop ICT industry talent and a strong learning ecosystem. The event that took place at Makerere Guest House was presided over by Uganda’s ICT and National Guidance Minister Hon. Frank Tumwebaze. The ceremony was attended by the Chinese embassy Charge d ’affairs, Huawei Managing director, the Vice Chancellor of Makerere, and students from different Ugandan universities.

The academy, according to an MOU signed during the event, will run as a non-commercial cooperation project between Huawei and universities, colleges, and other educational institutions all over the world.
