D-day: Army court to deliver verdict in case against Abdalla Kitatta today

By the end of the day today, former Boda Boda 2010 patron Abdalla Kitatta will have known his fate from the General Court Martial sitting in Makindye.

Kitatta who was arrested in January 2018 from Vine Tea hotel in Wakaliga has spent a year and three months in detention at the military barracks in Makindye.

Following a rigorous hearing process that saw 15 witnesses including four from the state, and 11 defending the accused, the army court chaired by Lt.Gen.Andrew Gutti will deliver its verdict in the case against Kitatta and nine other members of the notorious Boda boda 2010 group.

The other people accused together with Kitatta include Ngobi Sowali,Ibrahim Ssekagya, Joel Kibirige, John Ssebandeke, Fred Bwanika,Hassan Ssematta,Amon Twinomujuni, Hussein Mugema

The group is accused of offences related to unlawful possession of military hardware and unlawful possession of a gun, pistol and ammunition.

They are accused of unlawful possession of 30 and 20 rounds of ammunition for SMG rifles and pistol respectively which are government stores contrary to section 161 of the UPDF Act.

The army also accuses the group of unlawful possession of military equipment including headgear and uniforms which are a monopoly of the defence forces.

Kitatta, a civilians was arraigned before the army court because section 119 (1) (h) of the UPDF Act 2005 states that every person found in unlawful possession of fire arms, ammunition or equipment ordinarily being a monopoly of the defense forces is subject to military law.

If found guilty, according to the UPDF Act, 2005, Kitatta could face a maximum penalty of life imprisonment.
