Proline beat Kyetume on penalties to storm maiden Uganda Cup finals

Proline Football Club qualified for their first ever Uganda Cup final after eliminating fellow  FUFA Big League Side Kyetume FC on penalties on Sunday at Lugogo in the semifinal return leg match.

The Mukono based side overturned Proline’s first leg 2-1 with an identical score after Cephas Kambugu and Patrick Ochan scored for the visitors whereas Ibrahim Bonyo scored for Proline and the game ended 3-3 on aggregate  to set both teams into the penalties.

In the shootouts, Vincent Kayizzi Walugembe and Benon Tahomera missed their kicks for Kyetume whereas only James Begesa missed for Proline and this ensured the game ended 4-3 in the favour of the hosts.

Proline progressed to the finals to set a date with the winner between Express and Bright Stars who are yet to play their return leg semifinal.

Speaking shortly after the game, Proline coach, Shafic Bisaso said the game was a good advertisement of the FUFA Big League.

“Both teams played well and showed how the lower league is day by day growing but the best team won. They dominated the first half but in the second stanza we recuperated well before forcing the game into penalties,”Bisaso said.

For Kyetume FC goalkeeper coach, John Billy Lukoda, rued missed chances that he said cost them the semifinals.

“We came with an intent of winning the game in the first half but squandered many chances and the moment this happened, it was only left for luck to take its course,”Lukoda said.

He noted that the Uganda Cup is now behind them and their focus now shifts to the FUFA Big League playoffs.

Express and Bright Stars will on Wednesday faceoff in the other semifinal at Wankulukuku that will determine the second finalist.

The Stanbic Uganda Cup final will be played on May 25 at Masaka Recreational grounds.

This is the 45th edition of the Uganda Cup that started in 1971.

Express FC and KCCA FC on ten times are the most successful teams in the second most prestigious competition in Ugandan football.

KCCA FC are the defending champions but were eliminated in this year’s edition by Tooro United.

The winners of the tournament will walk home with shs40 million and shs.20 million for the losers whereas semifinalists and quarter finalists will get shs10 million and shs5 million respectively.
