Kaliro: Family accuses businessman of trying to grab their land

The family of late Nekemiya Muwangala from Buwangala Nawakoke sub-county in Kaliro disitrict have petitioned the Justice Catherine Bamugemereire led commission of inquiry into land matters accusing city businessman Samuel Babalanda of grabbing their land.

The land in question covers over 200 acres and is located at Buwangala village in Kaliro district.

John Kunya one of the sons of late Muwangala said: "The land belonged to his late father Muwangala and his appointed him as his successor upon his death in 2008, started struggling with Salimu Kunya and others over land in 2016."

Kunya also told the commission that they have tried to report the matter to clan heads seeking for help but their opponents have ignored the decisions of the leaders.

"We reported the matter to the clan heads that is Henry Wako the Gombolola chief and the LC chairperson but these people did not respect their decisions," he said.

He narrated to the commission that it was a shock to the family when they discovered that land tittles of the land had been transferred into several other names.

Kunya claimed that they had been tortured by Babalanda and his operatives.

"They came with gunmen dressed in Local Defence Unit (LDU) uniforms and others in police uniform and surveyed the land, destroyed property and food crops," Kunya said.

Kunya asked the commission  to help him and the family get their land back.

"We ask the commission to help us because Babalanda is constructing houses on the land."

Later the commission discovered that out of 200 acres of land, the family is left with only 35 acres which could also be taken because the family does not have the land title.
