Police in Kampala yesterday arrested Godfrey Katongole the chairperson of Arcade Traders' Association together with two others as they tried to organise a protest against unfair treatment by landlords.

Tenants in the number of Kampala commercial buildings have been caught in the middle of disputes over the ownership of the number of Kampala busiest shopping arcade

“We used to pay tens of millions in taxes and now the taxes are in hundreds of millions  which is too high," Katongole said.

Katongole described how the landlords keep on increasing the rent which is unfair to their businesses.

“We want government this time round to come out and listen to our issues," he stated.

"We want government to solve our issues. Why do we suffer when president Museveni is not caring?"

Kampala metropolitan Police spokesperson Patrick Onyango said the traders' celebrations had been organised to take place in the middle of the road without police’s permission.

“A group of traders today tried to protest. It was not that they are demanding for the account but there was hidden agenda," Onyango said.

Police said the arrested persons will be charged with holding unlawful assembly and inciting violence.
