Museveni summons NRM MPs over Sugar Bill

President Museveni has summoned NRM MPs to hammer out a position over the controversial Sugar Bill.

The meeting is expected to take place today, according to sources.

Museveni refused to assent to the bill citing some controversial clauses that needed to be removed.

Particularly, Museveni is not happy with the proposal to relax the zoning rule which would make it easier for sugar millers to set up business next to each other. Big sugar companies led by Kakira and Kinyara petitionedĀ  the president against the proposal saying it would put them out of business.

However majority of the MPsĀ  want sugarcane out growers to have the freedom to supply millers of their choice.

This they say will create competition and lead to favourable prices.

The developments comes a day after officials from Busoga Kingdom met the Speaker Rebecca Kadaga and presented proposals as to how a win win situation can be obtained .

Last week, deputy speaker of parliament Jacob Oulanyah deferred debate on the bill to today, April 30 after legislators turned rowdy over the proposed zoning policy for the big companies .
