NRM rebel mps: the supreme court has betrayed Ugandans

Several National Resistance Movement (NRM) "rebel" Members of Parliament have described the historical verdict by the Supreme Court on the presidential age limit petition as demoralising for Ugandans.

The NRM rebel legislators led by Buyaga West MP Barnabas Tinkasimiire say the four judges that upheld the constitutional court ruling did not only betray Ugandans but also undermined practice of making a peaceful transition of power.

On Thursday this week, the seven-member panel of the Supreme court judges quashed the consolidated Presidential age limit appeal in a 4-3 verdict.

Four judges including the Chief Justice Bart Katureebe, Stella Arach Amoko, Jotham Tumwesigye, Rubby Opio Aweri maintained the status quo of the constitutional court that sat in Mbale in their judgements delivered separately.

Buyaga West legislator Barnabas Tinkasimiire says the four judges decision has caused many Ugandans to lose hope in the country's judicial system.

Tinkasimiire thanked the three judges Paul Mugamba, Eldard Mwangusya, and Lilian Tibatemwa Ekirikubinza who opposed the lifting of the age limit. He says they are now Ugandan heroes who will be celebrated after a change of government.

The fire spitting Tinkasimiire believes that the only opportunity left to change President Museveni’s government lies in the hands of Ugandans in the 2021 general elections.
