Court blocks Chris Obore sacking by parliament

The High Court in Kampala has blocked the sacking of Chris Obore as the Director of Communication and Public Affairs at Parliament.

Justice Henrietta Wolayo on Wednesday issued an interim order halting of Obore’s sacking pending hearing and determination of his main case.

“An interim order is hereby issued to enable the respondent to file a response in the main case,” Wolayo said after Augustine Idoot, the lawyer representing Obore and Sitina Cherotich on behalf of the Parliamentary Commission asked court for an adjournment because they were ill-prepared on the day.

Obore who parliament said his recruitment was founded on illegality for contravening Parliamentary Service Regulations sued the August House challenging the sacking.

In his suit, Obore says he in May 2015 received a letter informing him that parliament wanted to fill the position of the Director of Communication and Public Affairs.

“By the said letter, I was informed that I had been identified as one of the potential candidates being considered by the Commission and I was invited for an interaction over the same,” Obore says.

He adds that he was earlier this year served with a letter informing him of the termination of his contract by the Clerk to Parliament.

“I know that prior to the decision by the Commission to terminate my service, I had never been accorded a right to defend myself before the parliament service commission or any relevant body,”Obore says.

He later sought for an interim order halting his sacking until the main case is disposed of by the court arguing that it has a high rate of success.
