Pochettino: We played better than Liverpool but we lost

Mauricio Pochettino claimed that Tottenham dominated at Anfield – despite suffering a dramatic last-gasp 2-1 defeat at the hands of title-chasing Liverpool.

The Spurs boss insisted that Toby Alderweireld's late own goal after a blunder from keeper Hugo Lloris was cruel on his players.

“Overall I think we were better than Liverpool,” he said.

“I am very disappointed but I am proud of the performance. In the second half we dominated and played much better than Liverpool . Today that was the arrogance I want to see from the team, playing that way.

“We were laughing a little bit that there was more than £100million in two midfielders on the bench in Fabinho and (Naby) Keita and you go and play better and dominate.

“Liverpool have an unbelievable quality. I am so happy in the way we dealt with the game. We need to be happy because that performance makes us believe we are in the right way.

“In football, sometimes you deserve to win, like us today and you don’t win. My players are heroes an deserve a lot of credit whatever happens in the end of the season.”

Liverpool's late winner put them two points clear of Manchester City in the race for the Premier League title race. Pep Guardiola's side have a game in hand and Pochettino says Jurgen Klopp deserves massive credit for putting the Reds in contention.

“The pressure to win the title is so tough and sometimes you cannot keep the performance how you want,” he added.
