Minister Nantaba tells CID she won’t go to record statement

The State Minister for ICT, Aida Nantaba has written to the Criminal Investigations Division in Kibuli notifying them that she won’t be able to appear as had been requested.

The CID had on March 25 written to Nantaba summoning her to pass by their headquarters and record a statement in regards the death of Ronald Ssebulime, a motorist who was shot dead by police for allegedly following her on Sunday.

However, in a March 29 letter, Nantaba said she could not leave her home after President Museveni directed her not to leave her home unless told to do so.

“I am unable to report in person having been directed by His Excellency the President to confine within my premises until he himself instructs otherwise,”Nantaba said in the letter.

“In such circumstances, I’m restrained to travel to Kibuli Criminal Investigations Department headquarters as you requested. But you may in the meantime, consider visiting my premises to record the required statement.”

On Sunday, Nantaba, who was driving from her home in Kayunga reported to police a suspicious motorist whom she said had followed with an intension to shoot her dead.

Consequently, police in Naggalama alerted patrol trucks that followed the suspected assassin and later shot dead Ronald Ssebulime, a resident of Nakabugo in Wakiso district.

Police reported that Ssebulime was shot dead during a hot pursuit but it later turned out otherwise.

On Wednesday, Police spokesperson Fred Enanga said the officers on the patrol vehicle that arrested Ssebulime gave their commanders wrong information regarding the circumstances under which he had been shot dead.

“We regret that our initial media release of Sunday, 24th March 2019, surrounding the drive by threats by Hon. Idah Nantaba was not totally accurate,”Enanga said.

“It is true that the deceased was removed from the police pickup and instantly shot dead by our officer.”

Enanga said three officers were in charge of the police patrol vehicle that intercepted, arrested, handcuffed and later shot dead Ssebulime had been arrested.

He named the three officers as Cpl Edward Ssali who was the car commander, Constable Ronald Opira and Constable Ronald Baganza whereas another officer identified as Constable Robert Cherotich who is on the run is also wanted.

“They have been arrested for trying to conceal the true facts of the events surrounding the killing of Ssebulime Ronald, after they submitted false reports about what really happened upon intercepting the suspects.”

A number of people have since come out to blame Nantaba for giving police wrong information that led to the killing of Ssebulime.

However, on the other side, Nantaba says the motorist wanted to finish her off but accused police of having ill motives which saw them quickly kill Ssebulime without interrogating him.
