Kasese: Minister warns nurses, midwives against fuelling abortions

EDWARD MAKANIKA

Nurses and midwives in Kasese have been warned against involvement in the practice of abortion.

Dr. Joyce Moriku Kaducu the state minister for Primary Health-Care sounded a warning during the joint graduation ceremony of nursing and midwifery learners at one of the nursing institutions in Kasese Municipality.

It should be remembered that abortion in Uganda is illegal.

The ministry of Health estimates that 26% of all maternal deaths result from abortion related complications.

Kaducu stressed that today, nurses are fond of engaging in unlawful practices including abortion.

She added that health personnel are few in health facilities and therefore encouraged more recruits into the field to reduce the doctor patient ratio.

Kaducu warned the graduates not to rush to accumulate wealth because this will lead them into trouble.

She quoted a verse in the Bible (Genesis)which says "God didn’t create the world and everything in it in one day" and therefore they should always take issues in steps.

She noted that the education standards in institutions should be maintained to ensure training of good quality health care professionals that the field requires.

She revealed that nurses and midwives should love their job since the course is a professional sacrifice; adding that they should aim at higher levels of academic excellence.
