Ugandans urged to preserve climate, protect eco-system

Ten years after the biodiversity strategic plan launched, countries are now laying strategies for post 2020.

The strategic plan was a framework for action by all countries and stakeholders to save environment and enhance its benefits for people,.

At  a stakeholders’ engagement yesterday, the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) cautioned Ugandans against continuous damaging of the ecosystem.

The ten-year strategic plan was formulated specifically to address global environmental issues.

One year to the deadline, the world is still facing environmental calamities, which should be addressed and this can be archived if humans live in harmony with nature.

Uganda is currently experiencing effects of climate change, with abnormal changes in weather patterns.

Scientists also predict extreme rainfall in 2021, which is likely to raise lake Victoria by four meters.

Such an occurrence was last experienced in 1962.

NEMA said such findings are a threat to the country and there is need for massive sensitisation to bring everyone on board to arrest the situation before it gets worse.

Despite the existing laws that ban encroachment, the population pressure has forced many to tamper with the ecosystem and many have settled in wetlands, forests.

In the 1990s, Uganda was estimated to have over 12 million hectares of forest cover but it is currently said to be 1.8 million hectares.

This puts the survival of human nature in balance if the trend do not change, value nature and learns to live with it.
