Airtel to provide free-wifi to national libraries

Access to internet in Uganda has been a challenge largely due to limited internet penetration.

Airtel has unveiled a drive in which it will provide free wifi to national libraries across the country, as a way of boosting education.

The cost of internet continues to be high despite Uganda taking a deliberate policy to embrace ICT in schools in its sector policy.

Denis Kakonge, the legal and regulatory director Airtel Uganda said the initiative will benefit the entire country by improving access to records.’’

Charles Serunjoji, the mayor Kampala central lauded Airtel Uganda for empowering Ugandans through the project.

"Institutions like Airtel in Uganda is helping us and has given our students a chance to access information through internet," he said.

Stella Nekuusa a director from the National Library said this is an opportunity for them to guide readers and engage more people on accessing internet as it will equip learners with information.
