Museveni started the National ID mobilisation, you can’t use it to defeat him –Opondo

The government spokesperson, Ofwono Opondo has said that opposition and in specific Bobi Wine’s People Power stands no chance against Museveni while using the National Identity Cards mobilisation strategy which Museveni orchestrated.

According to Opondo, it is foolhardy and insubstantial that People Power pressure group is calling upon electorates to seek for their national IDs in anticipation of using it as stratagem to defeat Museveni who introduced the same.

Opondo made the statements while appearing on NBS TV’s morning breeze Tuesday.

“It is the government that started the national identity card program and we welcome all actors to help us mobilise people to get them (identity cards). Can this (getting IDs) overwhelm President Museveni? Absolutely not.”

The government mouthpiece also poured cold water on another opposition blueprint to present a sole candidate. This he said is a fart in strong wind.

“Whether the opposition comes as one block or not, I do not think the opposition block exceeds 40 percent in Uganda and I doubt they (opposition) will come together.”

Opondo was not yet done, he attacked presidential hopeful, Bobi Wine, predicting he will register an abysmal performance should he insist on contesting against all time winner President Museveni.

“There is a false feeling that there is a new kid on the block and many people are running there. NRM is methodical, systematic and resilient.”

However on the counter, Bugiri Municipality Member of Parliament Asuman Basalirwa claimed NRM is scared of Bobi Wine because he posses an open danger towards their exit.

“The candidate NRM fears will be known as days go by. It is very easy to know that NRM is scared of a person. He'll be suffocated, arrested, there will be manoeuvres to evict him from Kamwokya and his music shows will be stopped.”

Opondo would later interject saying that: “I do not think the candidate Asuman Basalirwa is running around with, can even get 2 percent.”

In May 2011, President Museveni launched the registration of the issuance of National Identity Cards (Endagamuntu) at Statehouse, with his wife and members of the first family becoming the first Ugandans to get enrolled.

In April  2014, President Museveni launched the Electronic Identity card issuance, describing the project as ‘a strategic investment’ that will not only eliminate election rigging but will also get rid of ghosts on government payrolls and further help keep crime low in our communities with quick and reliable identification of criminals by using their finger prints.
