Ngora rock that is threatening to erupt becomes 'tourist attraction'

Government is to deploy police at the Nyamong rock in Ngora district to regulate the huge number of locals flocking the rock to witness the said volcanic activity.

Despite the danger, the rock poses to the locals, it has instead become a tourist attraction and authorities say this may get worse if not curtailed.

Some locals that used to live at the base of the rock have already left their homes in fear while others are pondering  the future.

Curious locals were seen climbing up and down the rock, examining the cracks that have since developed as others display their local expertise regarding the same.

According to authorities here, this is putting more lives in danger, since there is no information so far about what is happening beneath.

Government however plans to deploy police around the rock to regulate locals who are tampering with the rock.

Some locals that used to live at the base of the rock have since left in fear while other families that lived just meters away have been resettled by government in a near by town.

The locals we spoke to said government had delayed to provide a quick relocation program despite their willingness to relocate for safety.

They want an immediate relocation plan before it is too late.

On Saturday, the the state minister for Relief and Disaster Preparedness  Musa Ecweru disclosed that government will dispatch a team of geological experts on March 25 to examine the rock and advise on the way forward.
