Soroti diocese finally gets Bishop 5 years later

The Holy Father, Pope Francis has appointed Rev Fr. Joseph Oliach Eciru the new Bishop for Soroti, five years after the diocese operating without a bishop.

The appointment was carried in a message by the Apostolic Nunciature in Uganda signed off by the in charge affairs Alfred Rayan D'Souza and dated March 13, 2019.

However, D’Souza said the confirmation of Oliach’s status will be made in Rome by Midday or 2:00pm Ugandan time.

“Other details regarding his Episcopal Ordination will be made in due time,” the statement reads in part.

“Let us share our prayerful support to Bishop –elect Rev Joseph Oliach Eciru that he will be guided and strengthened by wisdom and courage of the Holy Spirit to discharge with fidelity and joy in his new mission,” the statement continues.

Rev. Joseph Oliach Eciru has been staff at St Mary’s National Major Seminary in Ggaba. He replaces Rt. Rev. Emmanuel Obbo who was promoted to Archbishop of Tororo Diocese in 2014 after the retirement of His Grace Joseph Lote Kiwanuka.

Oliach was ordained on August 9 2003, in 2006 he left for Italy, Rome to study on a church scholarship in biblical theology (PhD) at Pontifical University Urbaniana.
