President Museveni is set to pass out a total of 6,000 Local Defence Personnel at the Kaweweta Military Training School in Nakaseke District today.
“HE, the President will preside over the pass out of LDUs at Kaweweta Military Training school on Friday, March 15, 2019,”read a message by the Presidential Press Secretary, Linda Nabusaayi, early this week.
The group will be passed out after completing a four month training course in military drills at Kaweweta.
Hours after the gruesome murder of former Buyende District Police Commander ASP Muhammad Kirumira last year in Bulenga, along the Kampala- Mityana road, President Museveni announced a move by government to recruit 24000 Local Defence Unit personnel to beef up security in the greater Kampala area.
The president explained that government will deploy both crime preventers who will be first vetted by their LC1 leaders and reserve force to be recruited into LDUs that man towns and will help fight insecurity and urban crime.
“Kampala has 1000 villages and we shall fill them with man power and our guns will answer these criminals. We shall see which guns have more effect.”
This means that on average, each village in Kampala will have 24 LDU guards.
The army recently put a criteria followed by those willing to be recruited as Local Dfence Unit personnel
“They must be healthy and medically fit; ready to undergo medical and physical body check and a road run test endurance and body fitness,” said the statement by the army spokesperson, Brig.Richard Karemire last year.
The army also insisted that those willing to join the recruitment exercise should be between 18 and 35 years of age and should have a minimum formal education of Primary Leaving Examination (P7) level certificate to S.4 and without any other formal employment.
“Letters of recommendation from LC1 chairpersons, LC1 secretaries for defence, PISO, DISO and GISO duly signed are a must. Recruits must have no criminal record and must be residents of the area.”
These were recruited from the areas of Mukono, Wakiso and Kampala district where the level of criminality is high according to President Museveni.
“These idiots (criminals) don’t know the elephants they are fighting with. They have done it repeatedly and I have ordered for mobilisation of 24,000 LDUs. We are also going to recall reserves to man towns,” Museveni said last year.
The LDUs are expected to be armed and will augment police in fighting criminality in areas where they are deployed.
Currently, the President ordered for the deployment of the army in areas of Wakiso, Mukono and Kampala to beef up police security.
