Government asked to support vendors of solar products

SHAMILLAH NAMAATO

Government has been called on to consider supporting solar products vendors in accessing different markets in the country as a way of encouraging the use of the energy source especially in rural areas.

Frank Ssebowa, the team leader of the Uganda Off Grid Market Accelerator said such support can be channeled through favourable tax policies and cracking down on counterfeit solar products.

Despite the fact that there is a relative growth in the use of solar power in the country, the Uganda Off Grid Market Accelerator, an organisation focused on accelerating the growth of off-grid energy in Uganda, said challenges are making it retrogressive.

The Uganda revenue Authority also acknowledged the need for solar power consumption, the reason there is no tax on solar products.

The Uganda Off Grid Market Accelerator met to deliberate on ways that can help increase on the solar power consumption in the country as a way of not only conserving the environment but also improving on human health.
