VIDEO: 10 perish in Mayuge accident

TEVEN KIBUMBA

Ten people died yesterday in Mayuge when a Coaster registration number UAT 672Q heading to Iganga from Kampala collided with another Coaster registration number UAM 775 L at Wandago trading centre, 12 kilometres along the Jinja- Iganga highway.

At Iganga Hospital mortuary, where the bodies were taken, the mood was sombre as family members gathered to identify their loved ones.

Mary Kwagala who survived the accident said the driver of the Coaster UAT 672Q was reckless. He attempted a high risk manoeuvre despite objection from the passengers.

"We told him that he was driving recklessly yet we were in a narrow corner but he just ignored us," Kwagala said.

Some the children who survived are currently fighting for their life at Iganga main hospital.

The chairman, Iganga hospital management committee Sam Obiira, said they had been overwhelmed by the number of dead bodies.

"We call for any assistance from government," Obiira said.

By press time, the wreckage of the two vehicles had been towed to Musita police post pending investigations.

Wandago trading centre, known for the brewing of crude waragi, is a black spot on the busy highway.
