Daniel Sserunkuma the player to watch as Vipers host Bright Stars

Vipers Sports Club is embroiled in a serious title chase with 12 time champions KCCA FC and today’s game against Bright stars will have a huge baring on their chances of defending the title they won last year.

Key to their ambition is star striker Dan Sserunkuma, who is the current club’s top scorer with nine league goals and was the league’s goal scorer last season as the Venoms piped the ‘Kasasiro boys’ for the title.

A proven finisher, Serunkuma unlike last season when he only had Bright Stars’ striker Nelson Senkatuka and his former teammate Milton Kariisa to worry about, this time the competition for the title is bigger.

Police FC’s Juma Balinya who scored his 12th of the season yesterday is a serious contender for the golden boot yet he is not the only one ‘Mzei’ should be worried about.

Sports club Villa’s Bashir Mutanda too has eleven goals to his credit and he doesn’t look like he is done.

Joel Madondo of Kirinya Jinja SS, like Sserunkuma is yet to hit double digits with nine to himself, tallied with KCCA FC’s Patrick Kaddu but his form for the students has been outstanding.

But the ever confident Sserunkuma isn’t really bothered. Ahead of today’s game, he revealed how he has his mind set on one thing. Scoring goals, and that is his job.

“In training we try to focus on creating some chances to scorer goals. This is the most important thing and we hope one day we shall start scoring freely. Am personally always prepared to score goals.”

Vipers have gone two games without a win in the league, coming off the back of a 3-1 home loss to SC Villa and one all draw at the Buhinga Stadium in Tooro.

Bright stars too have their struggles. They have gone ten games without a win in the league. Their last test of victory dates as far back as 1st December 2018, against Paidha Black Angels but they are a motivated side having shocked URA FC out of the Uganda cup with a 2-1 win at the mandela national stadium last week.

The first round at champions stadium in Matugga ended goalless but the last time the two met at the St. Mary’s stadium, Tom Matsiko netted the winner in the 89th minute to give them a 3-2 win.

Micheal Nam Ouma will be boosted by the return of Captain Tadeo Lwanga and midfielder Moses Waiswa who both missed the last two matches while Geoffrey Wasswa, Bashir Asiku, Livingstone Mulondo and Bashir Ssekagya remain are the notable absentees.

Fred Kajoba’s side currently lies 9th on the log with 24 points in 19, having won 5 matches, drawn nine, and lost five.

A victory for the home side will narrow the gap with KCCA FC to just four points following the garbage collectors’ one all draw with Police FC on Thursday.
