After announcing the people’s government, many have attacked Dr Col.(rtd) Kizza Besigye saying he is seeking relevancy and trying to usurp Robert Kyagulanyi who has swept support in the opposition.
Betty Nambooze, the Member of Parliament Mukono municipality and elected Minister of Information in people’s government, says it’s National Resistance Movement’s (NRM) propaganda to tarnish Besigye’s Image. Nambooze says whether Besigye is relevant in today’s politics or not is not their concern, the target is to take power.
“We are a group of national politicians who are committed to give Ugandans leadership as they liberate themselves,” says Nambooze.
These comments came after the deputy chairperson of the NRM caucus Solomon Silwany said Besigye lost relevancy in the political field and is looking for any opportunity to come back.
Silwany said, “I think Col. Besigye could be thinking of how to come back and contest in 2021 election”.
Silwany says the reason Besigye has lost face in the opposition is the loss of elections,“ You cant lose four consecutive elections and think you are still relevant.”
Nambooze says all this is irrelevant as the people behind this talk want to divert their attention. She explains the reason behind the creation of peoples government, “We declared war against President Museveni’s government. Ours is a non-violent struggle. We belive that a true liberation of this country must be spearheaded by the masses but they need leadership.”
She has rubbished sentiments that people’s government is fighting Kyadondo East MP Robert Kyagulanyi
Nambooze argues, “Hon. Kyagulanyi is a principal in the opposition – a principal can’t be under another principal. But we will work with him and people power.”
Nambooze says the opposition will take part in the 2021 elections even if they fail in their initial goal of replacing the Museveni government before that date. She says the opposition fought to prevent an extension of MP’s tenure to seven years during the age limit debate and those elections are their baby.
With different political blocks coming up including the DP coalition, people power and people’s government, Nambooze explains the multiple groups as a strategy that will work for the opposition.
“We can’t put all our eggs in one basket, as long as we are all aiming at the same thing. At the right we will come together.”
Besigye still has a case of treason in court after he was sworn in as the people’s president right after the 2016 general elections. His cabinet has 21 ministers.
