Tororo: Police recovers stolen cement worth Shs 9 million

Police in Tororo has recovered 337 out of the 340 bags of cement that had been stolen while in transit from Tororo to Kumi district.

The recovery followed a tip off from the turn boy of a Tata lorry number UAM383M that was hijacked seven kilometers into the journey.

Police has so far have arrested two people including the driver of the lorry in connection with the robbery as investigations continue.

Tororo district police commander John Rutaagira confirmed the arrest of two suspects and discovery of the bags of cement. The recovered bags of cement were worth Shs 9 million at factory price.

By 5am on February 14 Police had started trailing the lorry number UAM/383M that was destined for Kumi with over 17 tons of cement.

The vehicle was found parked at Maguria village at the home of one Oketcho with bags of cement already off loaded into a store.

Police cordoned off the area, before breaking into the store.

Alli Musa the truck driver, who was supposed to deliver the Cement to Dolly Hardware in Kumi, said he was tired and asked a colleague only known as Kabata to deliver the merchandise.

His son Isima Bakisi, narrated how they were trailed just after leaving the factory.

Lawrence Wamali, the assistant marketing manager Tororo Cement said rampant theft is costing them heavily.
