Parliament threatens to issue summons after MAK VC Nawangwe fails to turn up for meet

Makerere University Vice Chancellor Professor Barnabas Nawangwe has snubbed the education and sports committee of parliament.

Nawangwe who was summoned to appear before the committee today together with members of the university council wrote to the committee chairperson Jacob Opolot asking that the meeting be held on Thursday instead.

This request didn’t go down well with the legislators.

Kalungu County West legislator John Sewungu told the press that the committee is now considering issuing summons to police to get the Vice Chancellor and members of the University council to appear before them.

The committee however received a petition from the student’s body that demanded for an immediate resolution of the crisis at the university.

The students are urging parliament’s education committee to arbitrate over the wrangle between MUASA and the University Administration.

Makerere University, Uganda’s oldest and most prestigious centre of higher learning has entered a fourth week of industrial action from the lecturers’ body.

They accuse the Vice chancellor of arbitrarily suspending their chairman Dr Deus Kamunyu who was advocating for the return of some of the 45 lecturers dismissed from the university.

The committee will sit again tomorrow to listen to the University council, the supreme body of the university and the Vice Chancellor.
