Judiciary makes 10 resolutions for 2019

The four-day judges national annual conference that concluded yesterday passed 10 resolutions aimed at promoting the rule of law in the country.

One of the key resolutions this year is for the judiciary to maintain a high degree of integrity and strive to ensure public participation and involvement in the court process and innovations that enhance justice delivery has been passed as resolution number one.

Judicial officers also resolved to adhere to the guidelines contained in the Practice Direction issued by the the Chief Justice on visiting locus before making any decisions on land matters.

Other resolutions include judicial officers being sensitised on the application and use of the Bangalore Principles on judicial ethics and for the judiciary to advocate for an increase in the human and financial resources.

While making general remarks at the end of the conference,  the Chief Justice Bart Katureebe called upon the judges to maintain ethics and integrity so as to shore up the image of the judiciary within the community.

Katureebe also revealed that he met President Museveni on Tuesday and the president dismissed reports that he had banned the recruitment of magistrates and other judicial officers.

"The president said he was misquoted," Katureebe said.

He said he will ensure that courts are housed in their own premises to save money spent on paying rent.
