DP: Museveni should apologise for calling us a party for Catholics

The Democratic Party DP wants President Museveni to apologise for comments he made during the NRM Liberation day celebrations, to the effect that it is a party for Catholics.

DP deputy spokesperson Fred Mwesigwa, told journalists at a briefing today that Museveni's words are an insult to a party whose membership cuts across religious and ethnic lines.

"We are calling on Museveni to apologise to DP members for calling us a Catholic party. Museveni should go back and read the about DP history," Mwesigwa said.

Museveni has said severally that he was a member of DP during the 1960s and a great admirer of Benedicto Kiwanuka, the founding DP President General.

The president said he fell out with DP because of thinking narrowly, along religious lines and for working with Idi Amin.

DP also responded to FDC’s criticism of the bloc strategy, proposed by the party where parties front candidates in regions where they have strong support.

Mwesigwa said theirs was just a proposal which is used world over by other parties.

According to this strategy, DP would front candidates in Buganda where they claim to have more support than other parties while FDC and others will concentrate on other regions.

FDC has termed the plan as parochial.

"I think it is a terrible. We do not know who gave DP the authority to zone this country. Ours is a national party and we will be filling candidates everywhere in the country so long as we feel he is a party member," Patrick Amuriat, the FDC party president said recently.
