MTN says “it is sorry” over leaked Bagyenda mobile money transactions

More staff at leading telecommunication company, MTN Uganda are set to be quizzed over subversive activities, the Nile Post has learnt.

On Tuesday, Police announced security had deported two MTN Uganda staff over what they termed as being engaged in acts which compromise national security.

“This is to inform the general public that security agencies in close coordination with immigration  officials have been investigating two foreign nationals working with a leading  mobile telecom company over their engagement in acts which compromise our national security, ”said in part the statement by police

Consequently, Olivier Prentout, the Chief Marketing Officer for MTN Uganda and Anne Tabura the General Manager in charge of Sales and Distribution at the same company were deported.

The two senior staff, the Nile Post has learnt were arrested and quizzed at the Special Investigations Division in Kireka over subversive activities before being deported.

MTN Uganda in a press statement released later confirmed this.

“On Saturday, 19 January 2019, the MTN Uganda Chief Marketing Officer Olivier Prentout was arrested by police at Entebbe airport upon arrival from a business trip abroad. On the morning of Monday 21 January 2019, the MTN Uganda Head of Sales and Distribution, Annie Bilenge Tabura was arrested by unidentified security personnel upon arrival at the MTN headquarter offices in Kololo, Kampala, “the statement by MTN read.

More staff deported

As the scandal at the leading telecom company unfolded, another senior staff at the company was also deported.

Elsa Mussolini, the MTN mobile money general manager, was quizzed before being deported.

He had been quizzed by the Special Investigations Division at Kireka over alleged incitement to violence contrary to section 51& 83 penal code act.

This website has however failed to understand the manner in which he or his fellow employees incited violence.

Police spokesperson, Fred Enanga confirmed the deportation of Mussolini but did not divulge more details on the matter.

This website has however learnt that investigations into the acts that compromise security of the country by senior MTN Uganda staff is still wide and ongoing.

It is said that Anthony Katamba, the general manager corporate services at MTN Uganda was also quizzed whereas more staff are to be quizzed.

Enanga confirmed that investigators are yet to rest with their inquiries into the matter but said the investigation is still protected.

“The investigation is still protected to enable the task team clear essential lines of inquiry,”Enanga said.

When asked whether more staff at the leading telecom company are to be quizzed over the matter, the police mouthpiece was never committed himself on the issue but promised to let the media know in case of any other staff involved.
