Police in Mbarara is investigating circumstances under which the home of the self-proclaimed king of Ankole Umar Asiimwe was burnt to ash Sunday night.
The fire started at around 8:00pm according to Rwizi Regional Spokesperson Samson Kasasira. The fire brigade was dispatched to put out the fire but it was too late to achieve anything
“We received a call but because the structures at the said palace are mostly grass thatched, the fire brigade reached when the houses were completely burnt,”Kasasira said.
According to Kasasira, there was no one injured but two structures were burnt down.
According to residents around the area, they have no idea who burnt the houses but believe the fire was directed specifically to Asiimwe’s house.
“If it was a genuine fire, all these houses should be down, but looking at the incidences on the ground, there is good reason to believe the fires are engineered,” one of the witnesses said.
Police in Mbarara on January 12, arrested Umar Asiimwe’s father and the brother whom they suspected to have assaulted him at the turn of the year.
The two; Edris Kamwesi (father) and Salim Tugume (brother) and others still on the run, allegedly beat up Asiimwe on 31stJanuary, for allegedly receiving money from President Museveni and refusing to share it with them.
According to Kamwesi, he did not beat up his son. He instead claims that Asiimwe connived with his loyalists to break his arm.
