Gladys Mukula, wife to NRM vice chairperson Eastern Region Capt. Mike Mukula, was dragged to commission by 85 year old Maria Rose Nabukenya, accusing her of grabbing her land located on plot 360 Kagugube, Makerere kivulu. The commission tasked Gladys Mukula to explain the anomalies surrounding her acquisition of the said land to which she found difficult to explain.

“I may not have the sale agreements but Betty who sold me the land was my friend and she trusted me even if we did not write. So I paid her the 50 million she wanted and she wrote for me the transfer letters,” said Gladys Mukula.

Commissioner Fred Ruhindi told Mrs. Mukula that the rich in the city were taking advantage of the poor and this was a time bomb since the poor can start a revolt against the rich landlords.

“There will come a time like is the common saying, that the poor will some daY have nothing to eat but the rich. You may see them as the vulnerable poor but when times change you the rich may be vulnerable.”

Mrs Gladys Mukula wipes tears from her eyes at the land inquiry hearing.

But it was perhaps the submission from commissioner George Bagonza that brought Mrs Mukula to her knees. Bagonza pointed out that while Mrs Mukula might succeed in forcing the old lady off the land, she would be constructing on cursed land that might haunt future generations of her family.

In tears, Gladys Mukula agreed to negotiate with the old woman for an amicable settlement.

The contested half an acre piece of land, was originally owned by Luiza Nalongo the mother to Maria Rose Nabukenya, the current administrator of the estate and complainant.
