Fresh evictions in Apaa

BENSON ONGOM

Fresh evictions have been reported in Oloyo Kampala, Gajjii and Purutyang in Apaa village affecting over 15 households and a health center.

it’s alleged that the eviction is being carried by Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) officials.

Houses were burnt and properties looted with the displaced now camping at Apaa trading  center.

According to the chairman LC5 Amuru district Michael Lakony, the eviction started on January 3 with soldiers putting on UWA uniform telling locals to leave.

Lakony who was part of committee set by the president to find a lasting solution to Apaa conflict said it’s contrary to what Madi and Acholi team agreed on during the mediation talks that were chaired by the prime minister.

Lakony together with locals now want international bodies to intervene after the failed talks.

The warden of East Madi Wildlife Reserve Captain Tony Olinga on a phone interview confirmed the incident and said they were just doing their job and emphasised that the mentioned place has never been de- gazetted for human settlement.

On 7th December 2018, Prime Minister Dr. Ruhakana Rugunda together with the 16 member committee set by the president agreed on the current status quo until the president gives his final position in the matter.
