Sacked Makerere University staff petition parliament

Some of the staff of Makerere University who were recently sacked have petitioned the Speaker of Parliament, Rebecca Kadaga over the manner it was done.

The country’s oldest university last month announced it had sacked 45 senior academic staff in a statement by the University’s Human Resource Director, Andrew Abunyang.

In their petition, the sacked staff say the manner in which they were relieved of their duties was never explained to them and demanded parliament to carry out investigations into the circumstances.

“The affected staff were subjected to a sham disciplinary procedure that culminated in their suspensions, termination or dismissal,” the petition reads.

“The disciplinary procedures to which staff were subjected ignored provisions of relevant laws, notably the Constitution and the Uganda Public Service Standing Orders on the handling of disciplinary cases. A number of staff were summoned for disciplinary action without any prior warning letters and there was no adherence to the progressive processes that should culminate in disciplinary action as required by law.”

The group has in their petition asked the speaker of parliament to interest herself in the alleged abuse of funds meant for travel, grabbing of the university land and failure to respect court orders and judgments among other issues.

They have also asked parliament to look into the matter of what they termed as irregular appointments at the university during the term of office of the outgoing chairperson of the Appointments Board, Bruce Kabaasa.

Social Media critic and controversial Makerere Institute of Social Research (MISR) research fellow, Stella Nyanzi was among the staff relieved of their duties at Makerere University last.

The decision to sack the staff emanated from a meeting by the appointments board that sat on December 11, 2018 and resolved to let them leave the institution.

Among others shown the exit included Dr Swizen Kyomuhendo who was implicated for sexually assaulting students in exchange for marks.

Sixteen lecturers were also been dismissed for abscondment whereas two others were terminated for financial fraud and seeking bribes.
