Government
has lashed out to Kyadondo East legislator cum singer Robert Kyagulanyi also
known as Bobi Wine for craving for political capital through attending concerts
where he is not invited.
Bobi Wine
and police have in the past collided after police cancelled a number of
concerts that he had either organised or was slated to perform.
On Thursday, the Minister for Internal Affairs, Gen.Jeje Odongo said there are always guidelines to be followed music concert and event organisers .
“Hon Kyagulanyi was not on the list of perfomers for the music concert held in Jinja on December 15th, 2018. He acted contrary to the set guidelines by holding a procession along Iganga road causing disorder,”Gen.Odongo told parliament.
The Internal Affairs Minister told
parliament that many of the concerts that have been cancelled by police had not
met the required health, safety and security standards put in place necessitating
their cancellation by security.
He said that despite sharing the required
standards with the concert organisers, they have on several occasions gone
ahead to breach them leaving security with no option but cancel the event.
“The police is mandated to protect
life and property, detect and prevent crime and maintaining law and order. They
(police) cannot simply look on and abdicate their role of protecting people and
their property,”Odongo said.
MPs react
Several Members of Parliament lashed
out at government for cancelling their fellow legislator’s concerts which they
said is a violation of his rights.
Muwanga Kivumbi said that restricting
music concerts denies the organisers and singers economic rights which he said
is unconstitutional.
“Music is a way of expressing
people's views and no one should be stopped from expressing their views,”Kivumbi
said.
Singer Kyagulanyi accused
government of stopping only him from performing at concert yet other fellow musicians
are given a green light asking parliament to look into the matter.
In response, the Speaker of
Parliament, Rebecca Kadaga asked government to desist from interfering with musical
concert because they are legal and many Ugandan earn a living out of them.
