Mutanda brace sees SC Villa shoot down Red Eagles in Kampala derby

A goal in either half ensured SC Villa beat Express FC in the StarTimes Uganda Premier League on Friday at Namboole.

Prior to the game, the record champions were not performing well, having drawn their previous two games but on the other side, Express had been boosted by the Tuesday win against 12 time champions KCCA FC at Wankulukuku.

However, SC Villa showed might under new tactician Douglas Bamweyana when Bashir Mutanda took advantage of a defensive lapse to shoot past Express goalkeeper Ronald Mutebi on 28 minutes for the hosts’ first goal.

Sixteen minutes after recess, Mutanda was at it again for SC Villa to double their lead when he scored in the 61 minute mark.

A mistake by defender Isaac Mutanga off a thrown in saw left back Derrick Ndahiiro take advantage to cross the ball for Mutanda to  shoot past the  Express  goalkeeper to complete his that saw SC Villa cruise past their rivals.

Speaking shortly after the game, SC Villa coach Bamweyana said the win was a culmination of all of efforts that finally paid off.

“We have been playing well but had failed to win. The progress is there and today is the testimony,” he said.

The win saw SC Villa move to 12th position on 12 points whereas Express remained 9th on 16 points in the 16 log StarTimes Uganda Premier League table.

On the top scorers’ chat, SC Villa’s Bashir Mutanda Mutanda is still leading with 9 goals followed closely by Kirinya Jinja SS’ Joel Madondo on seven goals.
