Education

A section of students’ leaders from different higher learning institutions have pinned legislators for pitching camp at different universities, splashing large sums of cash and posing with huge cars with intention to prey on vulnerable students.

The leaders from institutions; Makerere University, Kyambogo University, Uganda Christian University and Multi-tech business school, made the specific allegations while interfacing with a select parliament committee investigating allegations of sexual harassment in institutions of learning.

The committee headed by Gomba West Legislator, Robinah Rwakojo had summoned the students’ leaders to hear their views related to sexual harassment in higher institutions of learning and how they can help.

Sheebah Akampurira, from Makerere University, told the committee that they should start by stopping fellow legislators who are the perpetrators of this vice.

“Most of them you find them at the guild canteen and places around the university, they are there looking for hot girls and boys. So as you are trying to intervene, you should be aware that there are people doing it within you,” she said.

MPs are preying on us, the come and pitch camp at university waiting for vulnerable students. I am not afraid of saying it because it could be my sisters getting affected,” she added.

The student leaders said that legislators and specific ministers come to the premises with expensive cars and splash around money to confuse the vulnerable.

“Evening lectures usually end at 10:00pm, and by then we have expensive cars parked at hostels and guess who is on those cars; Rich men, ministers, MPs and we know these people,” Anastacia Nanono from Makerere University, remarked.

The students say apart from MPS, there is also a clique of lecturers that made university life unbearable.

“We know these lecturers by name, just give us room to tell you,” Paul Lubega claimed.

A one Clive Sharif Kiwanuka, also claimed that lecturers harass S.6 vacists during the registration process for pre-entry to university. “It is overwhelming, because most of them come when naïve and they fall prey to predating lecturers.”

The students advised that security measures be taken to safe guard the mostly the girl child.

“Universities need to install CCTV cameras on the compound and university offices but in the meantime, lecturers should keep their office doors open whenever they host students,” Ian Kikomeko said.

The committee chair urged the students to name and shame the culprits so they serve as an example to the rest. She however dispelled some of the issues the students raised, saying that not each car they see at the university is an MP interested in harassing students.

“The university is open for those who want to upgrade, including those MPs and Ministers who have already worked their money. It is therefore wrong to assume that whichever MP or minister you see at the institution is interested in sexual pleasure.”

The committee

will Thursday interface with the administrators of Makerere University on the

same.
