MP asks government to stock more condoms ahead of festive season

Members of Parliament yesterday urged the ministry of Health to increase the stock of condoms in the country ahead of the festival season.

The call was made by Mbale municipality legislator Jack Wamanga Wamai during a plenary session chaired by Speaker Rebecca Kadaga.

Wamai told parliament that a red flag was raised by social workers, NGs' and Rotary International that condoms were running out ahead of the busy festive season.

"Madam speaker, you know December is a very busy month and during this month, there are so many excited holiday makers swinging in all directions left and right without using shields which could be a health problem in the health sector," Wamai said.

Kadaga then asked the state minister for Health Sarah Opendi to explain why the country has not stocked enough condoms ahead of this festival season.

Opendi admitted that its true that there are not enough condoms but the government had intensified the process of sending out health messages on social media, radios, and electronic media.

"We call upon the youth not to engage in risky sexual behaviour and limit on the consumption of alcohol which may tempt them to be sexually active," she said.

She then assured that there will be adequate supply of condoms in Mbale Municipality which Jack Wamanga represents.
