UPDF intensifies operation against overloaded boats

KANYERE HAKIM

The UPDF Fisheries Protectorate Unit has intensified operations to impound over loaded boats on L.Victoria.

A number of boats were impounded in operation carried out in Jinja district.

According to the UPDF officers, this is intended to avert boat accidents during the festive season.

Due to the increasing number of travellers, the transporters on the lake use the opportunity to overload their passengers without putting in mind their safety.

Realising that many lives are in danger, officers attached to the UPDF Protectorate Unit have intensified operations on the lake to arrest errant transporters who overload their boats.

In a swoop carried out on Lake Victoria, commanded by Godfrey Kanyesigye a number of overloaded boats were impounded and travellers who were found without life saver jackets were arrested.

The UPDF officers handed them over to police before they were released after each of them bought life jackets.

Fishermen urged government to put a tax waiver on the life jackets and also ensure that the ones on the market are genuine.
