MP: "Female lecturer tried to sexually assault me"

Samia Bugwe North MP Gideon Onyango has claimed that a female lecturer at one of the local universities tried to sexually assault him when he was doing his master's degree.

Onyango made the eye-brow raising confession at Makerere University where a parliamentary committee investigating sex abuse in education institutions had gone to listen to testimonies from students.

The committee was set up by parliament after a public outcry over abuse of mainly female students by administrators in various schools and institutions of learning. It is chaired by Robinah Rwakoojo, the MP for Gomba.

Onyango told the students that even males are abused sexually only that many fear to come out.

He then gave his testimony which drew a mixture of shock and laughter.

"I was doing a masters' degree in my profession but my internal supervisor that time forced me to meet her at a hotel in Nairobi. She even sent me an air-ticket saying she badly wanted to see me," Onyango said.

He continued: "My supervisor attempted to harass me sexually. At that time, I was working in Darfur, Sudan and she gave me a condition of travelling to go and meet her in Nairobi...I wanted to graduate."

Onyango said the female lecturer is still serving at the university and would not want to disclose her name.

"She is very prominent," he said.

According to his profile on parliament's website, Onyango holds a Master's degree in Public Administration and Management from Uganda Christian University which he obtained in 2012.
