A guard attached to Senaca company was last night arrested by Kira Rd Police for allegedly vandalising newly installed CCTV camera equipment in Mulimira Zone, Bukoto.
According to a statement from Kampala Metropolitan Police, the guard, whose identity was not disclosed had managed to yank one of the pipes that support the cameras off the ground. He is being held at Kira police station.
The CCTV cameras were installed under the National Safe City Project and are meant to solve problems of urban insecurity committed by armed assassins riding motorcycles and vehicles.
The first phase of the surveillance system installation began in June 2018 and has steadily progressed with a number of 693 live CCTV cameras mounted to monitor Lungujja, Old Kampala, Rubaga, Naalya, Bulenga, Kawaala, Kabowa, Nateete, Mutundwe and surroundings.
This exercise is one of the measures that have been put in place to fight urban crime.
Some of the key capabilities of the installed CCTV cameras are surveillance, picking up number plates of wanted motor vehicles, identifying suspected criminals, monitoring traffic flow among others.
