DPP clears former Uganda Red Cross boss, Nataka, of wrongdoing

The Director of Public Prosecutions has cleared the former Uganda Red Cross Society (URCS) secretary general Michael Richard Nataka of any wrongdoing.

Nataka was in 2015 arrested and charged with offences related to abuse of office allegedly committed in 2013 while still the URCS boss but was later granted bail.

Now, three years since his the charges against him were opened, the Director of Public Prosecutions has written to the Anti -Corruption court asking that the charges against Nataka be dropped.

“This is to inform court that the Director of Public Prosecutions has decided to discontinue proceedings against Nataka Michael Richard. He had been charged with two counts of abuse of office,” reads the withdraw form dated November 14. It is copied to the court’s resident state attorney and the Kampala East Regional CID officer.

Prosecution alleged that between the months of February and June 2013 at the Uganda Red Cross Society, national headquarters at Rubaga in Kampala, Nataka allowed the importation of a motor vehicle, Toyota Tundra that belonged to an individual in the same container transporting a consignment belonging to the URCS which was deemed illegal and contrary to the body’s principles.

It was further alleged that between the months of May and June 2013 Nataka sought an exemption of taxes from Uganda Revenue Authority in respect to the Toyota Tundra belonging to an individual, which was declared on customs bill of entry as part of the list of vehicles for which URCS sought exemption from URA yet it never belonged to the body.

He denied the charges before being released on bail but hearing of the case had never kicked off until the latest development.
