Boda boda cyclist arrested over assassination list

Police have arrested a boda boda rider suspected to be part of the group of people that have been throwing letters threatening to assassinate prominent persons.

A list containing 16 people including government officials, cultural and traditional leaders and politicians was last week released sending panic among the people listed for assassination.

Kampala Metropolitan police spokesperson Luke Owoyesigyire has told the Nile Post that they have in custody one Lawrence Kibira to help them in investigations over the people behind the list.

“We arrested him from Kabowa after being tipped off by locals .He is currently detained at CPS in Kampala and will help us in investigations into the list and people behind it,”Owoyesigyire said.

The police mouthpiece asked the public to remain vigilant and report to police any suspicious individuals for action to be taken.

A number of people were thrown into panic after the list went viral last week that they were being targeted by unknown assailants.

The list includes: Kyadondo East legislator and singer Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu alias Bobi Wine , Buganda premier Charles Peter Mayiga and Government Chief Whip Ruth Nankabirwa and Moses Kasibante(Rubaga North MP).

Others on the list include Ntungamo Municipality MP, Gerald Karuhanga, Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago, Kawempe South MP Mubarak Munyagwa and Kampala Minister Beti Kamya.

The list also includes the titular head of Muslims, Kassim Nakibinge, former Kampala Metropolitan South Commander Siraje Bakaleke and deputy Police Spokesperson, Patrick Onyango.

One of the leaflets with the names was thrown near the home of Rubaga North Member of Parliament Moses Kasibante by an unknown person.

"When I contacted police, they assured me that they would investigate the matter,”Kasibante said.

Last week, the State Minister for Internal Affairs, Obiga Kania told journalists that security is not taking the matter lightly, adding that investigations into the new list have begun in a bid to find out the people behind the list.

“We have got copies of those documents have already submitted them to police for investigations to begin,” the junior Internal Affairs Minister said on Thursday.

Last week, police spokesperson Emilian Kayima confirmed commencement of investigations into the list.

“We are pursuing all lines as part of our investigations to find out who the authors are and those involved in the circulation,”Kayima said.

A number of high profile people including Maj.Muhammad Kiggundu, prosecutor Joan Kagezi,AIGP Andrew Felix Kaweesi, Muslim clerics, MP Col.Ibrahim Abiriga and recently ASP Muhammad Kirumira have in the past been attacked and shot dead by unknown assailants travelling on motorcycles.

Police recently said they had received intelligence reports indicating imminent attacks on VIPs in various parts of the country before, during and immediately after independence celebrations that were held on October 9.
