Musician Sinead O'Connor converts to Islam

The Irish singer formerly known as Sinead O'Connor has converted to Islam.

According to several posts to Twitter, the 51-year-old has taken the Muslim name Shuhada' Davitt. Shuhada is Arabic for "martyrs".

Davitt shared several images of herself in hijab, describing her conversion as a "natural conclusion" of religious study.

"This is to announce that I am proud to have become a Muslim," Davitt wrote. "This is the natural conclusion of any intelligent theologian's journey. All scripture study leads to Islam. Which makes all other scriptures redundant. I will be given (another) new name. It will be Shuhada'."

Davitt's twitter profile image had been changed to show a Nike tick with the words: Wear a Hijab. Just do it.

On October 24, the singer posted an image of her sel in a green hijab, captioned, "Happy".

In 2017, still named O'Connor,  Davitt was hospitalised after posting videos to social media in which the distressed mother of four said she felt isolated and suicidal.
