The fees increment will affect only new students – Kyambogo Vice Chancellor

Kyambogo University Vice chancellor, Prof. Elly Katunguka has opened up on the proposed fees increment at the Banda based university.

The professor noted in a letter which he addressed to students yesterday evening the proposed increment in the fees structure will take effect in the second semester and it won’t affect the continuing students.

“The increment in internship fees to Ug. shs. 250,000/= will affect new students i.e those of 2018/2019. The old fees will apply to continuing fees,” part of his address asserted.

He went ahead to notice that the decision to increase the internship fees was reached upon after several consultations that put into consideration costs of providing services that related to internship. He says that students from the schools that agreed to the increment of the shs. 250, 000/= will only pay this money in the second semester since the announcement was made in the middle of the semester.

Yesterday, a section of students at Kyambogo University went in arms and protested against the increment in tuition which was proposed to be by an extra shs. 200, 000, internship to 250, 000 and the late registration fee from shs. 50, 000  to shs. 100, 000. They gathered at the senate building demanding for an explanation from the Vice Chancellor before police replied them with tear gas and bullets to disperse them after as they had turned rowdy.

A section of the students also blamed their guild president, Amanya German for siding with the administration on this matter but in a phone interview with the Nile Post, Amanya German has said these students are doing it for political reasons.

” Those are students with other ambitions. They are taking it as a ground for campaigns which is really misleading.

On the other hand, The demonstration was needed but most of our students don’t know what they want.
This is not the time to shout “no exams”. They should create a clear environment for those that have paid tuition. And besides, Students should understand that when one enters a university, they sign on admission letters which clearly seals our contract with the university. So for me as far as I know. We are supposed to pay tuition communicated as per our admission and not the increase,” the guild told Nile Post.
