Two people have been confirmed dead and 18 other sustained injuries after a Lorry truck belonging to Uganda prisons overturned at Namayumba, along Hoima road in Wakiso district.
The accident happened at about 9:00am when the Lorry truck, an Isuzu registration number UAL, 349F over turned as the driver tried to dodge a boda boda motorcycle.
According to Uganda Prisons Service Spokesperson Frank Baine, the prisoners were from Kitalya prison farm when they got involved in accident about 200 meters from prison.
“Unfortunately we have lost two prisoners, they were 21 and we have the rest transferred to Namyumba Hospital,” Baine said.
Among the dead is a one Zubairi Yasin who was convicted in 2013 for desertion. He was serving his sentence until 2025.
Baine says that Prisons Service has dispatched a group of medical doctors to coordinate with the medical facility in Namayumba in order to sustain those that are injured.
“Our staff (Warder Emojong) was injured very seriously. We have a team going there to handle the situation,” Baine added.
In February this year, four prisoners were killed and several others seriously injured in an accident in Kaberamaido district after the Tipper truck in which they were traveling, overturned.
The prison’s boss Johnson Byabashaija would later blame the officer in charge of Kaberamaido Prisons for transporting inmates in a vehicle which is not licensed to carry human beings.
